את הבלזם הירושלמי המקורי פיתח לפני כ- 300 שנה האב אנטוניו מנזאני די קונא, נזיר המנזר הפרנציסקאני אשר פעל בעיר העתיקה של ירושלים ושימש כרופא ורוקח.
צוות חוקרים ישראלי פרסם בשנת 2005 את מחקרו בדבר הבלזם הירושלמי בכתב העת המדעי הנחשב Journal Of Ethnopharmacology. סיכום ממצאי המחקר מעיד על פעילות מגוונות של הבלזם הירושלמי.
